a-censoring-nation

I happened to catch the second part of South Park's "Cartoon Wars", where one of the boys tries to get Family Guy canceled because he just hates it. The show decides to show the image of Mohammed, and Cartman views this as the perfect oportunity to get rid of FG once and for all.
Both episodes were hysterical, and the first part dealt with FOX censoring the image of M. The whole deal last night was whether Comedy Central was going to censor SP when Mohammed actually came into play. As the episode ran the creators of the show self-censored themselves to make a point because M never showed up. A big black screen appeared instead of Mohammed stating that the network deemed the image of M inappropriate, and as a whole, the scene was hysterical if you consider that Parker and Stone did this on purpose, but apparently Comedy Central did censor South Park.
What makes the situation so hypocritical on the part of Comedy Central is that Mohammed has shown up in a previous episode of SP. Furthermore, the creators of the show have lampooned other religious figures with glee, yet Comedy Central hasn't placed black screens to cover them up. What's different this time? People aren't going to riot in our streets and go nuts because they showed M's image. This is the USA. You came here because our banner said freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and freedom of religion (within certain parameters). If we have to deal with people dissing our religion then vice versa because we love what this country has to offer, which is again, freedom.
Oh wait, I forget, my country is ruled by fear now. Or maybe it's all some elaborate hoax?

rules-for-interpretation

There's a language problem in Florida. Specifically, the problem lies within the court system and the would be interpreters who claim to speak the language and know the lingo, yet they botch up the translations and innocent people go to jail. This just isn't right (and I am evil incarnate)! The Florida legislature wants standards, tests, assurances that the interpreters will do their job correctly. I'm hoping for the best.
Now if only someone could set in place some standards for the so-called Spanish running rampant here in SA. Oy vey.

So the interview happened today. It was long, and worth it.
Yours truly returns to the land of the legal.
Now, how do I juggle bar study, teaching Spanish and clerking? Anyone? I have it all mapped out neatly in my head, but oh wow is this going to look fun on paper.

gospel-or-apocrypha

The would be scholar in me is completely fascinated by this revelation of a "Gospel of Judas," especially since the document places Judas in a far more favorable position than oh say the New Testament. I'm curious. I want to read it.
For centuries we've been told that this character is a deceiver, a betrayer, the most loathesome person imaginable, yet here's a "gospel" that if it were to be accepted (doubtful), it would alter some religions and reinforce others.
Text! Text! I need text! I can't ask questions without text. ::pout::
By the way, how cool was it that yesterday was 01:02:03 04/05/06. ::le sigh:: Nunca jams.

I picked up dinner at Wendy's today and decided that I had to use the drive-thru because waiting for someone to hold the door open for me would take years. The look on the guy's face when I went to pick up my food was absolutely priceless. Score one for the scooter babes!

brief-visit

@ 04 . 04 . 06 @ 11:10

I was in El Paso last week visiting the parents, and now that I'm back I think I miss the weather! Granted, desert weather in the summer is dry and hot, but in the spring it can still be rather cool. Low 80's with breezes and the occasional wind storm. Ok, I hate the wind storms. I don't miss those.
On my way back to the apartment I'm smiling because I'm home, and then I notice the temperature. It's in the 90's here. It's hot! It's not even summer yet, and it's hot. I should have stayed another week in El Paso. Imagine what the summer is going to be like. Steamy. I'll be living in a sauna. Joy.
Anyway.
El Paso was nice. I did say hello to the parents. Saw NIN in concert again, and the concert was recorded. The downside was that the handicap section was in a place where idiots could stand in front of us and block the view, so my little brother had to be a bodyguard. It was infuriating, but I told him to tell security and they managed to keep the place body free. This ruined his plans to sneak into the mosh pit. I felt bad.

quote-of-the-week

C. loves to tell me about her job. Some days she deals with good patients and some days she has deal with the type that aren't so agreeable. This week she was working up a patient that had just the right answers... or not.
"My head hurts," he says.
"Where?"
"On Earth."

movies-for-download

Starting in April people will be able to legitimately download a digital copy from a small library of movies for a fee. Buy the movie, download it, watch it as many times as you want, and your hard copy will come via snail mail shortly. The catch is that it's loaded with digital rights management software preventing the buyer from sharing his/her new purchase with friends and family. After all, everyone is a thief.

Listening to: Los Fabulosos Cadilacs - El Matador
I finally realized what it was about that new show Miracle Workers that made me grimace everytime a preview came on the set. It wasn't the music, though to be honest that much mushiness made me wonder if ABC was trying to make even the most bitter of people sniffle with such contrived melodies. No, it was the actual stories and the way they seemed to be portrayed.
I haven't seen the show. I'm probably being extremely unfair. The people chosen to be fixed probably deserved it. My question is did the show take the time to explore their hardships in society? Or were they just portrayed as freaks? Did they highlight what these people could do? It's not a death sentence, but shows like these love to portray a disABILITY as such a life-ending situation that society feeds into this ignorance. Why not report on how limited we are by business who still refuse to follow ADA guidelines? Or a government who keeps cutting back on benefits sorely needed?
It's so easy to say, "Voila! You're fixed," on television. I don't need to be fixed. I want an equal chance to enter a building as an able-bodied person without the pity stares or the misconceptions that I'm missing out.

In the first test of its kind, a court in Norway has ruled that a Creative Commons license is legally binding. Apparently a gossip magazine took some pictures off Flickr that belonged to a former MTV VJ without permission. They thought they could get away with using the images, but since the use was commercial it violated the license and infringed on his copyright, and now there's growing caselaw for CC.
