A second teaser trailer for the forthcoming Hunger Games sequel, Mockingjay Part 1, has been released.
I found the book painful to read and had to force myself to get through it, but the movie might be more entertaining.

The Night Eternal by Guillermo del Toro
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
After reading all three books, the thing that stands out the most is that this series would make an excellent movie or tv show. The action and the descriptions just lend themselves so easily, and I can understand why the series is being filmed for tv now.
On the other hand, this is some of the worst writing I have ever read. As a script, it works, but as a novel, it's just awful. There's so much telling instead of showing in this novel, and the development of the female characters? There is no development! There's the wicked bitch, and the damsel in distress. It's downright infuriating how the female characters are just used as props. Hispanic characters fair no better, and part of this novel is written by a Mexican.
In the first novel, the story had promise. I liked the twist on the vampire myth. It completely falls apart in this one. My only hope is that the tv show does a better job than the novels.

This has confused me since I was little, especially watching a lot of UK TV (which is basically on the other end of the nudity/violence spectrum in a lot of ways).
I can understand ratings and whatever... knowing what your in for is a good thing, but beyond "make sure the rating is accurate", restrictions on what can/can't be said/shown/etc on TV/Movies/Whatever is just silly... isn't it?
Why 'Hannibal' Can Show a Man Feeding His Face to A Dog
Guidelines for sex and violence on TV are hilariously twisted. That's why Hannibal can get away with gruesome, but can't use sexual euphemisms.

While most of the World Cup attention is on the field, Felix Sanchez of the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts, says broadcasters' racist commentary should be getting more attention.

The Strain by Guillermo del Toro
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
In The Strain, vampires are not the tragic, romantic beings from Stoker's time, nor do they shine and mope. No. the vampires in this novel are positively disgusting, and I think that's what makes this book intriguing.
The story grips you from the first page. From the moment the air controllers notice something is wrong with a just landed plane, to the sudden disappearance of bodies from a morgue, this story does not let up.
Was it the best? No. Characters are poorly developed and some chapters do drag a bit. There was also a bit at the end that just seemed completely out of place for a character, and I'm sure it was to get the plot from point A to point B. Really lazy writing.
But I could not stop reading. Which is why the book gets three stars.
