Taking a picture

Cinematography: In their own words. We know who my favorite is, but let see who wins. Pan's Labyrinth. So far I think this movie has won every nomination. It deserves it. Ah, there's the music.

Visual Effects: Pirates of the Caribbean. No contest.

Foreign Film: The Lives of Others. Upset. I'm kinda sad.

Two songs

The Oscars are Green. Hmm... I think I'm intrigued. I love how they keep baiting Al Gore to make an announcement. Oh, that was brilliant. They cued the music right as he was about to make a so-called announcement.

The first two songs were kind of ehh.

Again with the Nicholson!

Here comes Animated Film: Happy Feet

Adapted Screenplay: The Departed - A hint of things to come? Oy I think that the long speeches are going to start. Yup, cue the music.

Blunt and Hathaway are so cute, and I'm loving that Streep playing around with them. So Prada.

Best Costume: Marie Antoinette

Now they're presenting a humanitarian award to Sherry Lansing. She's wearing a gorgeous dress, and she's so accomplished too. Kudos.

A salute to sound and cinema

The choir was wicked cool!

Wow, they just censored Greg Kinnear. And he and Carrell were so funny.

Sound editing: Letters from Iwo Jima
Sound mixing: Dreamgirls - My friend just killed me. She asked if mold was growing on Beyonce's dress. Oy, poor woman. She just doesn't pick them well.

Oh, supporting actor is coming up. I wonder if there is going to be an upset. I love surprises. Wow, Alan Arkin won. Definately an upset.

LOL. Ellen is trying to give Scorsesee a screenplay.

Ok, the dancers are cool. They just did an interpretation of Happy Feet. So nifty, and so cute.

Will Ferrell et al

Will and Jack Black? Seriously, this is cool. Now they included John C. Reiley. The Oscars used to rush through everything, and so far I'm entertained. And the men want to take home Helen Mirren. I don't blame them. She looks amazing for her age.

Makeup: Pan's Labyrinth. Woo-hoo

Aww, now the kids are presenting. So cute.

Animated Short: "The Danish Poet"

Live Action Short: "West Bank Story" - ok now that I've actually seen a clip of this, weird!

One thing I've noticed is that the speeches have been blessedly short. Granted, none of the big presentations have started yet, but so far I'm impressed.

They just showed some clips from Letters from Iwo Jima with narration by Eastwood. I'm really looking forward to seeing that movie.

Intro

Ellen calls it celebrating the nominees, and the montage was nice and funny. They used Peter O'Toole, and it ended with the lullaby from Pan's Labyrinth. I'm so hoping this takes a few awards. Actually, go Mexico.

She's saying it's an international awards show because of all the nominees.

Dude! Jack Nicholson is bald!

Aw, she just picked on Leo DiCaprio, and he just blushed!

Ellen just danced. So far I loved the intro.

Here come the first presentations. A very snazzy looking Daniel Craig too, but the bow on Kidman's dress is kinda iffy.

Art Direction: Pan's Labyrinth. Yes! Oh yeah. Here comes the sweep.

Fame and dresses

Out of all the dresses I've seen tonight I've been impressed the most by Rachel Weis. She said she was wearing Vera Wang, and she looked fabulous. I can't say the same about J. Lo. She was supposedly wearing vintage. Methinks she just wanted to look like a long lost Dreamgirl.

As for the Oscars, I'm pulling for the Mexicans. I hope they show del Toro the love. He so deserves it.

Are you kidding me?

In conclusion....

So the rest of my choices last night for the Oscars were hit and miss at best. I was thinking that "Brokeback Mountain" would win though secretly my fingers were crossed for "Good Night and Good Luck." Suddenly "Crash" is the love child of Hollywood, and well I'm not surprised to be reading this morning that a bunch of people are disappointed. What a great Oscar moment. The underdog wins.

I personally loved "Crash" when I saw it oh so many months ago. My roommate told me to go see it, and I remember just being floored. There are so many scenes in the film that are downright raw, yet it deserves a second and third viewing. Why don't I own this yet?!?!?

As for reactions to the telecast, well it was fun. I really liked Jon Stewart as the host. The audience in the auditorium hated him, but I was laughing hard everytime. I missed that. I hope they ask him back. My only qualms with the telecast were the dvd bashing (subtle much) and the producer's need to cut off the winners' acceptance speeches. The speeches were actually decent this year, but apparently ABC had the need to start the music before the winners even got on stage! They did this to Robert Altman.

Now for the snubs. I mentioned A History of Violence in a previous post, but I forgot about Sin City. It needed to be included for Art Direction and Editing, and a bunch of other things. Technically the movie was seemless. The actors looked like carbon copies of the comic book characters, and the background scenes were amazing.

I wonder what this year will bring.

Crash???

Wow, what an upset.

Mas mañana.

Almost there...

The third song...and it's being censored, but apparently a few things are coming through on the East Coast. Is she saying witches or bitches. She's saying witch...and at the end there's the key word.

And the winner is...HUSTLE AND FLOW!!! Sweet. Everyone needs to see this movie. I'm so glad that hip hop isn't being shut out, but I didn't think it would. Eminem won a few years ago, so it's possible.

Now all this evening needs is an upset. It was supposed to be Amy Adams, but I'm going for another George Clooney Oscar.

Sound Editing: Jennifer Garner looks so pretty. King Kong is going to win, and I'm right.

Here comes the montage respecting the dead. Let's see how many times I say "Aw."

Foreign Language: Will Smith - Bwah ha ha. It's going to be "Tsotsi." Ha!

Film Editing: I chose Gardner but "Crash" won.

Here comes Swank to present Best Actor. Go Heath!! Damn Howard was good too, and Hoffman's a favorite, but his voice sounds gimmicky. Strathairn gave me chills. They all deserve it. Hoffman wins.

Music and Oscar

Original Score: What I loved about the music from Munich was that it was subtle when it had to be, yet powerful at those moments when you knew everyone in that movie theater was squirming with you. I chose Geisha, but I wouldn't be surpised if Brokeback wins it's first award here. Gee, I should have gone with my gut. Brokeback begins with the sweep. I really need to see this movie.

Maybe it's just me but it seems wrong to have the music from "The Lord of the Rings" playing during the tragic scenes of "Titanic." I could just be used to Horner's music.

Sound Mixing: Go "King Kong" Woo-hoo.

So here comes the break. The special award to Robert Altman. Streep and Tomlin are hysterical.

... and we continue

Lauren Bacal just introduced a segment on noir, which is going to explode in Hollywood with "Brick" once it's released. It's supposed to be a really, really good movie. I wish they'd release it already.

Next up is Documentary Short. I chose "The Mushroom Club." And "A Note of Triumph" wins.

Documentary: "Murderball" should be a winner, but I chose Penguins and it wins.

I just had a "OMG it's that song!!!" moment. The song has been used on some tv show, and it's very moving. Now I know where I'd heard it before. I still believe "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" is the better song. The music in Hustle is such a huge part of the movie, and that song in particular is really the story of the pimp.

Oh, "Speed" music and Art Direction. "Memois of a Geisha" and yes.

I need to see "Network."

I'm wondering if now is a good time to make some kettle corn.

Oscars 2

Will Ferrell and Steve Carrell are hysterical with the makeup. Narnia should win, and it does. Wow, the Star Wars people are going to be even more upset.

Oh! Supporting Actress. Go Amy Adams. And I'm going to get a phone call telling me how wrong I was. Yay Rachel Weis. "The Constant Gardner" was a brilliant movie. I'm surprised it didn't receive more nominations along with "A History of Violence."

Oscars part 1

Alright, so it's Oscar time. Watching the show is a tradition, and my family and I watch it religiously. We try to see who guesses the majority of the winners, and for the mother and me it's all about the fashion.

Tonight, I'm raving about Felicity Huffman's dress. She looks incredible in it. Sandra Bullock looks like she's wearing a balerina costume. Michelle Williams: pretty.

So, now the Oscars are starting, and I'm thinking John Stewart will be back.

George Clooney just won for supporting actor and his speech was so touching. He honestly didn't expect to win, but I'm glad he did.

Ben Stiller is on now. His shtick on Visual Effects is dumb but funny. My choice is for "King Kong." And yay, it wins, which it deserves. Kong was amazing, and one of these days Serkis is going to get the recognition he deserves.

Animated Feature. I chose "Wallace and Gromit", but I loved "The Corpse Bride." Surprise, surprise Wallace wins. Methinks Clooney will have the best speech of the evening.

Live Action short. My choice "Six Shooter" but I had no clue, and oh gee I was right.

I chose "Jasper Morello" for Animated Short and "The Moon and the Sun" took it.

Costume Design: "Memoirs of a Geisha" Same.

February 27, 2005

The End

Actress who breastfed an Apple - worst joke ever!

Foreign Film: It goes to... The Sea Inside El Mar Adentro. Now I really need to see it.

The man, Sam Jackson, is presenting Original Screenplay. Sunshine should win and finally the Aviator does not win something. Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind wins, and I wish Jim Carrey had been nominated. I swear he's been snubbed too many times.

Best Actor: Cheadle, he was so good in this, and the movie was powerful. Depp, I love him. I'm glad he's being recognized. DiCaprio, he's just good, but I still see "I'm the King of the World!" Eastwood, haven't seen it but I here he's good. Foxx, he's the favorite, and it could be an upset.

Jamie Foxx wins. Yayness. Can I just say I've loved him since "In Living Color" Aww, he thanked his daughter. And damn, that man loved his grandmother. Ohh, I'm going to cry. That was so sweet.

Julia Roberts had twins? She looks nice. She's presenting Best Director, and Aviator lost to Million Dollar Baby. How upsetting. Scorcesse deserved the Oscar.

Best Picture: My pick is Aviator. Million Dollar Baby wins. ::pout:: The only pleasure I get from this is how upset all the disability activists are going to be. They obviously don't get movies.

Original Score

I haven't heard any of them except for Lemony Snicket, which I love, and it didn't win.

Back to Beyonce. She has an amazing voice. That has been established, but the duet is beyond disturbing. Why oh why must she sing like that. There's no meshing, just warbling.

Best Song: Motorcycle Diaries. And the original singer sings the song as his acceptance speech. Maybe next time the Academy will allow the original singers to perform their songs. It won't be such a train wreck.

Best Actress: Hilary Swank wins. Annette Benning deserved an Oscar, and they're cutting her off. Funny.

Who's the Phantom?

Hands down, Beyonce has a gorgeous voice and she made "Learn to be Lonely" sound beautiful. But what I really want to know is was that Gerard Butler or some no name dressed as Phantom. I swear the blood started to warm.

Cinematography is next. House of Flying Daggers deserves it, but Aviator just won. This doesn't mean it will win Best Picture.

Oh, that's Terminator music, and I'm such a geek for knowing it.

Sound Mixing is next. Spiderman 2 is nominated, but so is Aviator. Salma didn't say what movie won, but thankfully a little banner showed up and Ray was the movie. That's rather fitting. Hmm...I wonder who speaks better English, Salma or Cruz. Incredibles wins.

Banderas is going to sing now instead of the original singer. It's the first song nominated in Spanish for an Oscar. Now see, Banderas looks so much better with the hair down rather than in some ponytail that is not flattering, especially when he's standing next to that she-he pretending to be his wife.

And the awards keep coming

Is Rock trying to make a statement that African Americans don't watch good movies, just bad ones?

I love the bit with Edna, and Brad Bird does her voice. All the costumes are excellant in this category. Aviator is going to win...oh my god Brad Pitt... and yes I was right. Aviator wins and deserves it. So much about that movie just clicked.

Alright, Rock is just not funny. It's excruciating.

Best Supporting Actress. Cate Blanchett deserves to win. She was amazing as Hepburn. I loved Linney in Kinsey. Madsen's performance was subtle, and wow she's a favorite. Sophie's perormance was heartbreaking in Hotel Rwanda, and Natalie Portman was great in Closer. I've seen all these films!

Cate wins.

Nice little Carson tribute.

Now Leo is presenting Best Documentary. Born into Brothels wins. I was so sure Super Size Me would win just because of the controversy, but apparently not.

Dunst's hair looks amazing, and now she's presenting editing with Bloom. Aviator wins again. It's going to be a sweep.

Counting Crows just sang their nominated song and the lead singer sounded flat. It was rather bad. Maybe nerves got to him? It wouldn't be the first time. I remember when Madonna bombed "You Must Love Me."

Adapted Screenplay: Before Sunset - I loved, loved it. Sideways should win. OH YEAH Sideways wins!!!!!! Finally, it wins something.

By the way, the whole Catherine Zeta Jones bit, amusing but I bet it could have been better if Sandler had adlibbed. Rock is depressing me.

Now Jake and Zi are presenting visual effects. It's between Potter and Spiderman 2. Spiderman 2 should get it because it was amazing, and it does! I'm sad it wasn't recognized for more awards, but at least it received something this year. Bring on the well written, acted, directed Marvel movies.

The president of the Academy introduces Al Pacino. Are we already at honorary Oscars? This is going by fast.

Robin Williams

Why couldn't he have hosted the Oscars!!!

Incredibles should win for best animated film. Yay, and so it does. I hung up on my mother to listen to Williams and this category. It also goes to show that Pixar is a powerhouse for its animation and its storytelling. What will Disney do without it.

Cate Blanchett is presenting makeup from the audience. Pretty dress. Lemony Snicket wins.

Now it's the first original song. I guess using a major recording artist to sing the songs is the network's way to draw more viewers. I think it's sad. I'd rather hear the original performers.

Chris Rock

The Bush/Gap analogy was hysterical. I'm surprised how lowkey he is yet odly funny. I've seen better, but he's no David Letterman.

They're presenting art direction now, and they have all the nominees on the stage. I like Lemony Snicket, and I'm wondering, isn't humiliating to have all the nominees on stage?

Aviator wins. Does the sweep begin?

Supporting Actor is next. Clive Owen. Come on. Come on. Alan Alda was good, and Thomas was such a bastard in Sideways. I have to see Collateral. I just got it on Netflix. Hmm...Morgan, this is a tough one. Come on Clive!!!

Ugh!! Morgan deserved the Oscar though I haven't seen the movie, and oh, he gets a standing ovation. Next year, Clive.

Fashion

Beyonce: Amazing! Melissa is obsessed with cleavage.

Not so crazy about Hilary Swank's dress. It's a cross between grandma and classy.

Dear God, Antonio Banderas looks like he's been bitch smacked too many times by Melanie's breast implants. That hair! Ugh.
