Finally.
TOUCHDOWN!!!!!!!
TOUCHDOWN!!!!!!!
You know it's a bad day when the offense decides to not show up for the third time in a row.
Appalling.
0-3 for the season?
Really?
Sad to say it, but I'm really missing Quinn and Ty.
And it's game time. I love the start of the game.
Oh crap!! Seriously? No. Please say that didn't happen. Ok, they're going to review it. Please don't say it's a fumble.
Yes!! It's first down Irish.
So, this Demetrius Jones guy is interesting. He's not quick. I just hope he doesn't try to pull a Quinn.
I think I'm already nervous.
5 min. later: SOB! It's going to be a long game. Methinks Tech may score. Damn It.
Courtesy of yours truly, my parents and I now own this years official ND Shirt. Just in time for the first game against Georgia Tech on September 1st. Of course what would make the experience even better is an Irish win.
No brainer, right?
There's nothing like college football to pull me out of a blogging doldrum.
There's a conference right now on the Virginia Tech tragedy that occured yesterday, They're about to release new information about the gunman. They just confirmed that both incidents are related, and ballistics matched. They also have a person of interest.
I'm just stunned by it all. Notre Dame played against Virginia Tech my last year there. We barely beat them. It was a sign of a not so brilliant year in football. Hearing this now it's rather shocking to recognize the school, to hear something so horrible.
The shooter is allegedly a resident alien from South Korea. Why do I have a feeling that the media is going to go nuts over this?
USC is struggling. In the third quarter they are barely leading by two. I just can't believe I'm watching another game with the Trojans, yet in the interest of bowl eligibility, a Trojan loss could be advantageous for the Irish. Of course any loss by USC is good news for me.
The game of games is about to begin. The Trojans are about to lose, and I can't be happier. Of course I just ran into a snag today. Mom showed me the form for the bowl tickets, and there's a chance that the Notre Dame team might come to play here. A bowl game in El Paso?! I fly out two days before the bowl game. I may have to change my tickets if that ever happens.
The Irish playing in the formerly titled Sun Bowl. I think I'm baffled.
Game time... Go Irish. BEAT TROJANS. and their stupid song too.
The Wolverines lost and the Trojans seem to be waking up. I think they need to fall asleep again. I hope that by tomorrow the sports people will be throwing in ND's name into the pot for the national championship game a bit more should USC falter. If the Trojans don't lose, next week will be a nail-biter.
This morning I was faced with a dilemma. Do I watch the Notre Dame v. Army game, or do I watch the Michigan v. Ohio State game? Home game versus alma mater's mortal enemies? Then again I was born in Michigan. Who am I kidding, I have to support Michigan.
As of right now Michigan just scored a touchdown, but they're still losing. In the meantime, it was a blowout at South Bend. Finally. Except, it was Army. 41-9 is nice.
USC lost to Oregon State. Sweet...
Any bets on who is going to be ahead in the polls, ahead of the Trojans?
So much has happened in the last week, and I can't possibly make up for it. Just briefly. Where in the hell did the Irish pull that out from, and can they please start a game with a little bit of domination. I never expected a 40-37 upset over Michigan State, but I'm not complaining. At least my boys won. Now if only the Irish fans in the stadium could have planted an ND flag at their 50 yard line...
Now for my favorite part of the year: it's pilot season, and I can honestly say that I hated one, and I'm addicted to another one.
Six Degrees. I taped it, and as I sat there watching it all I could think about was, "Is it over yet?" It has some pretty good actors, and the storylines have potential, but I just don't care. After an amazing Grey's Anatomy (Mer, choose McVet!) this show just falls flat, which isn't really sad because even though JJ Abrahms supervises, it so doesn't have his touch. It can die.
Brothers and Sisters. This I can see as Everwood for adults. The pilot seemed rickety. It was a bit all over the place. Mother and daughter have conflict, they pretend to be nice, then they have uber fight with a teeny tiny bit of depth, the dad dies. Oh, and there are a bunch of siblings with their own issues, and half of the clan is made up of Republicans! I like the little mysteries. It's going to take a while for me to stop picturing Ron Rifkin as Sloane. The show gets my three episode try.
Jericho. End of the world. Skeet Ulrich. Bad guy from Deadwood. It's kinda dark and the pilot was way better than the critics described. It gets three episodes.
Studio 60. Two words: Matthew Perry. Every scene he was in had me laughing, and the best part was that he was nothing like Chandler. I've never watched an Aaron Sorkin show, but I loved the rant at the beginning, and I like the relationship between the writer and director. Every character is flawed, and that always makes for interesting storytelling.
Heroes. Addicted. It's this year's Lost. I'm irked it ended the way it did, and then again the previews spoiled what happens next, so now I know he lives! One episode packed in so many little mysteries, I forsee a cult. I liked how some characters embrace their powers, and some are terrified by them. It's also interesting to see how some of them are beginning to find each other without knowing it. How are they connected? Is it really genetics, or where they all part of some experiment? The madness begins...
Ugly Betty hasn't aired yet, but I'm definately looking foward to that show.
::pout::
Irish fans slept a bit less comfortably Saturday night, but I think we all have to agree that it was too close of game. Whether the hype was deserved? Well, I guess that will be obvious in the next two weeks. I certainly don't see this as a repeat of Ty's year, or Davie's bad luck. Weis is too good for that (and please don't make me look like a fool).
So, here here to 14-10 in favor of the Irish football team. Penn State should be a breeze next Saturday, right?
I'm worn out! Is it possible to be this worn out, and it's only halftime? I'm not going to make it if the game continues this way!
The way I see it maybe the Irish got spooked by all the hype. To be trailing 7-10 at the half, the team has to be spooked. That and well Bob Davie is doing some on screen commentary, so that's enough to psych out anyone (though he is defending his former team a bit). Brady Quinn is still in top form as demonstrated by the last few plays. It's most of the first half that kind of phased him. Weis didn't make a few smart calls. Having a true freshman block a receiver was bad.
Ugh.
UGH.
The Weis man makes miracles after the half. I'm hopeful. I have to be. Last year proved that my alma mater still had an awesome team, and this year can mean a national championship. Every year we current and former Domers hope for a #1. So, let the game continue. Thoughts on the end of the game tomorrow.
Oh, and courtesy of Kris, here's a glossary of ND terms. I do not miss the marshmellow fights!
The Irish are #3 in the Coaches Poll. I think I see a National Championship in the near future. Oh yeah, it's very, very close.
The Irish lose again in overtime, or rather double overtime, to Michigan in the second round of the NIT. Do not pass GO, go not collect $200. Why can't they win the overtime matches? This is the next one among many. ND could have received an invite to the NCAA tournament had they held it together, but no. They just can't handle it. Grr.
The FBI has issued a warning stating that future NCAA basketball games may be the target of suicide bombers thanks to the post of an unidentified extremist. Oh joy, another threat. I'm trembling. Here I thought Notre Dame's latest loss and failure to reach the tournament this year was the end of my world.
USC went down last night, and I watched it live on tv. My Irish have been avenged, but of course nothing will be as great as the inevitable rematch this fall. For now I can rest easier knowing that USC is no longer #1.
Living in Texas it's really amusing to walk into a Starbucks today and suddenly realize that 3 out of 4 of the people sitting at the tables drinking coffee are sporting Longhorn caps or sweatshirts. Scary.
What is it with the Fiesta Bowl? It's such a jinx.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Fumble!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes! Yes! It's because I started watching. Honestly, I thought another game was on. And for the record I think my roommate is going to kill me.
Go Irish. Beat Buckeyes.
Update: And I no longer feel bad for not going to the bowl game. I'm just going to pout now and look foward to the new season. After all, USC will no longer be #1. Just for this one time I'm going for the Longhorns.
So it's going to be the Irish against the Buckeyes. The last time they met I saw ND lose in the stadium, and it was so sad. It was also an introduction to another rivalry, one that was just as intense as ND v. USC. I've been waiting for weeks to see if the matchup would fall into place. Now I have to see if I can go! I have one more day to fill out my ticket order form. Things just have to fall into place.
Regardless, the Irish are going to pummel the Buckeyes.
::phew::
And so the humiliation begins...The Backer has changed his colors to red due in part to a bet he made with The Irish Trojan. Since the Irish lost, the site is now known as "Traddies" and quotes the USC alma mater. At least for a week.
Ouch!
It will be one very long week, but what a brilliant bet. Methinks this should be a tradition. Next year maybe Brendan will rename his blog for a change?
But it was a great game. It really was. Edge of my seat the whole time, and hey. At least we didn't lose by like a gazillion points. Though the last call by the ref, hmm makes me want to agree with the student section. But maybe that's my lack of knowledge of football and undying devotion to my alma mater.
Sorry The Backer. This next week will truely suck. Here's hopeing someone else will knock USC from #1 even though we were so close!!
There are some pretty juicy rumors up at Loy's site. Apparently, either Bon Jovi or Springsteen might be making an appearance at the Friday night pep rally before the ND v. USC showdown. I guess it's because it's a Jersey thing, and Charlie boy is from Jersey.
Jealous much?
OMG yes!!!!!!! The coolest person my class got to meet was Regis Philbin! Been there. Done that. Move on.
Lou Holtz might be there too, but really. He was there my freshman year, and that was pretty nifty. I just never understood what he saw in Ron Paulus. Then Davie took over and the football program went to hell, and everyone thought it would be cool to do a D instead of an L during the 1812 Overture at the beginning of the 4th quarter. We should have left that alone.
Ahh, the memories.
The Irish are so going to knock the Trojans off their #1 spot this weekend. Bye-bye Trojans!
This is killing me!!!!!!!!!! And for the record, I think my throat is now raw. I'm like my own mini stadium. hehe
update: Bloody hell!! I'm so bummed. But ya know what, I still think Weis is doing an awesome job. I just wish we'd won. ::pout::
7pm. I'm all settled on the couch. I change the channel to ABC, and I can't contain my excitement. Afterall, my boys are playing. Win or lose, I watch. Except Texas is Texas and they'd rather put on the A&M v. Clemson game. Well I hope Clemson wins.
In the meantime, the Irish are winning. Absofrickin' brilliant. 35-13
The Backer has returned with a few thoughts on the new coach of the Fighting Irish. It's a new season, Weis is the new coach, and expectations are high. I was irked Ty was kicked out as coach because I don't believe he was entirely to blame for all the losses last season, and well I don't know how people will react this time. Davie had an awesome season his first year as the coach as did Ty. Will this mean a repeat for Weis? A part of me wants it to be modest so that expectations will be moderate. Then again, the rabid fan that erupts during every game, wants the coach to crush every opponent. Seriously, I'm a mad woman.
Charlie Weis is one of us. He's alumni, and I want him to stick around long enough to prove himself. That has to be worth at least five years.
From Brendan's blog comes the news that Notre Dame has started selling the new SHIRT for the 2005 football season. It's yellow, and it has script on it. Though I normally don't mind yellow shirts, this just looks shocking. We're going to match Michigan and USC. Couldn't they have added a little green at least? I mean, it's not ugly, but it's not Notre Dame.
My mother broke the news that the Fighting Irish are once again without a coach. She thinks Ty was fired because the students were prepared to rally, demand the man's head on a stake to parade across campus in honor of Our Lady Mother. Poor Ty, do students really hold such sway? Or is it the fact that such an inconsistant season and all those other scandalous rumors I've been reading about at The Backer more likely the cause to such a short position at Notre Dame?
Personally, I liked Ty. I thought he was better than Bob Davie. He wasn't as arrogant as Davie. Not as stupid either. Davie didn't lose to USC three times in a row by 31 points. I know, I know. Still, I was there for the first three years of the Davie reign, and I tell you it was painful.
For more details about the firing and the press conference check out The Backer and Irish Trojan ::cough, cough ... traitor... ;-) ::
Did it have to be 31 points? I have wounds, and they aren't pretty. The bragging rights are gone till next season, and this is if the season starts off better than this one.
At least we get to go to a bowl this time. The question is, can we win it for once? And for the record, I hope UCLA knocks USC off its #1 perch. That would be sweet.
but maybe it shouldn't have.
Alright, so maybe Notre Dame's defense had some trouble stopping the offense, especially that last minute, which completely killed the thrill of a near miss field goal that had tied the game minutes before. Had they stopped them, the game would have been in overtime, and the refs would have given it to Pitt anyway.
You can't tell me some of those calls were legit. That was so not a pass interference in the 4th quarter, and you have to love it when the student body disagrees with the referees. I wonder if the FCC is going to slap NBC with a fine because that "bullshit" came through loud and clear, or will Palko's be enough.
What a frustrating game! The Irish may not have been at their best, but the refs were biased, and I'm still disappointed. I'm really keeping my fingers crossed, and hopeing for an upset in two weeks.
I used to have this weird little routine when I was stuck in DeBartolo or South Quad on one of those many cold, brutal freezing days. Since I was never fond of wearing the big winter coats, I'd just use a regular jacket (with the customary ND letterhead somewhere, of course), some mittens, and maybe a scarf and the hood if the wind chill was in the single digits. Armed with these slim items I'd rush in my baby blue scooter all the way to the library and take my sweet time going through the hall way. It was just enough time to warm up the nearly frostbitten fingers, toes, ears, and lips, and it was half the distance to my dorm room. It was also my favorite stop right after a game.
See, on game day, everyone comes to the library to oogle at the mural we call Touchdown Jesus. We can see it from the stadium, and well from the pedistrian viewpoint, we get to see all the people standing and cheering before and during the game. When the game was almost over, my friends and I would leave and take shelter in the library. We'd smile at the cheering because it was still almost just as loud, and breathe a sigh of relief because this time we weren't going to get trampled by the rest of the students as they raided the field. Oh, and have I mentioned it was warm?
I miss game day. I missed today thanks to a migraine. It wasn't a home game, but Notre Dame proved once again that no matter what the odds, they can still beat a ranked team, and that to me is better than nothing at all. I think people keep expecting Ty to be just as good if not the next Lou Holtz. Hell, I was there his last year, and he was like a god, except Ron Powlus was the QB, and that sort of ruined it a bit.
The point is, Ty is better than Davie, and these boys are slowly but surely picking up the pieces. They win some, they lose some. Don't underestimate them. I think it's about time USC started sweating a little.
Here come the Irish.
but YES!!!!!!!!
Thousands of Michigan fans have decided to go into mourning after the stunning defeat at the hands of the Notre Dame Irish. What was originally presumed to be a washout game in favor of Michigan turned out to be the key to their undoing.
Ok, enough pseudo-journalist language. My boys won. They frickin won. I watched the BYU game, and I couldn't even escape the snide remarks from relatives in Mexico! This isn't supposed to be possible, people. College football is supposed to be moot to them. It's all about pro, but no, let's give our American born relative hell. She is after all the rabid Notre Dame grad. (Damn proud of it too.)
So today on the flight to El Paso I'm weighing my options. Do I finally indulge in unlimited online access, or do I watch Notre Dame play? I was glued to the tv the whole time, trying to scream even though my head was killing me. Mark my words, Quinn, Walker, and Stovall, those are the players to watch.
Here come the Irish.
I'm gone. But not for long. We're flying out to San Jose today to see the Irish play tomorrow against Stanford. This is my first game in almost 4 years. It's actually kinda sad, but I'm kinda giddy. I just hope my boys don't lose.
See ya Sunday.
Ouch! When I was there they threatened to eject us from the game, but that never happened, even when the students started throwing a dead octopus and fish. It was unbelievably gross and had absolutely nothing to do with the fun of throwing marshmellows at each other. Neither does planting rocks or coins in the spongy things, unless you're throwing it at the USC band. ;-)
In all seriousness, I never throught the administration would get serious about the situation, but seeing how ugly its gotten, I don't blame them. At the same time, don't kill the marshmellow tradition. Especially when USC and their stupid band is involved. After hearing their fight song played over and over and over again, you really can't blame us Domers, ahem former now Alumni. My row, we hit a few of them too when they lined up after their performance at halftime in '99. It was sweet, and we beat them too.
Let's not mention Saturday.
Damn it! Only managed to watch the first half of the game before taking off to see Cabin Fever, which was a weird movie. I can't believe we're 1-2 for the season. I have absolutely no bragging rights now. Ouch.
Let's not talk about the Notre Dame v. Michigan game, shall we. I lost bragging rights after the second quarter, have probably lost them for the entire season. ::wince:: And I was so looking foward to giving the Texas fans/friends a little grief.
The parents called to tell me the game seemed like a lost cause. They were down by 12 points. After the phone call they were down by 13 points, so I went to the tv and I continued watching the end of season 3 of Buffy. What can I say, after receiving more bad news today, watching that seems to cheer me up especially since my alma mater was losing horribly.
After watching "Graduation Day, Part 2" I come back and we won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 29-26 in overtime no less. That must have been an excruciating game, but we won. Yay ND. Yay for the new football season.
