I think the preview for next weekend's episode ellicited more screams from my friend and I than anything else in tonight's episode of Angel. That's not to say that what we watched was any less entertaining.
Kudos to team Whedon. That's three episodes I've enjoyed immensly, though I think the Gunn-centric one has to be my favorite of the season.
What I liked
This episode was just erie. You expect Jasmine (damn it, that's a good person's name not a bad one) to appear and act like something evil almost immediately, and when the opposite happens, it still screams 'evil' anyway. It's the 'too good to be true' feeling, especially when Connor freely called Angel dad. It reminded me much of Angel's dream where everything fixed itself. Something just didn't vibe, and in this episode it was much more apparent.
Later in the episode the facade begins to crack, and I jumped when Fred was shown what Jasmine really looks like. It was just downright gross and freaky. I wonder, once everyone sees through the facade, will this be the appearance of the Beastmaster, or is it another disguise? And how is it that Fred was suddenly able to see this other self?
Another interesting thing, Jasmine's touch transforms humans into demons. I could be wrong, but it certainly didn't look like the guy, who also saw the truth, was slowly being disfigured. Will he become a full-fledged demon as a form of punishment? It's interesting that Jasmine has this power.
I also liked how the whole conception of Connor was explained, sorta. I'm sure there's more to it than what Jasmine said. It was just intriguing to hear it mentioned. Also interesting was the way Jasmine was playing Connor. Could this be forshadowing?
There's not much to be said about the cast since they were for the most part acting as blind disciples. I did like Fred in this as well as her quirkiness. She has always been an interesting character.
What I didn't like
For some reason the episode seemed a little recycled ideawise. It reminded me too much of Glory even though Jasmine is no way like her. The parallels to the psychiatry ward just bothered me a little. Same with the fact that once the guy saw through Jasmine he felt it was his calling to kill her. How so? Maybe Jasmine is from the same dimension as Glory?
Oh yeah, it doesn't help that tonight's episode is a two parter, and I'm still shocked by what I saw in the previews.
